Breathing is a simplistically complex subject. Everyone is able to breathe, but the biomechanics and reasons for breathing on land are foggy. In the water, the subject gets more convoluted. Surprisingly, the topic of breathing is rarely discussed on pool decks despite the correlation between faulty breathing, decreased velocity, and injuries (neck, shoulder and low back.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about the topic of my next book/DVD topic, and have many ideas planned. Of all the pieces, I’m particularly excited about is my e-book on breathing.

While researching the topic, I've crossed a lot of great data. One particular piece by Cardelli in 2000 analyzed the depth of inhalation, exhalation, apnea (breath holding), stroke length, stroke rate, and velocity between expert and less expert (doesn't discuss definition of expert) swimmers. I admit, I have only looked at the abstract as I don't have access to the paper, but the results are interesting.

The researches had six expert and less expert swimmers perform a 100-meter and 800-meter with and without nose pieces, while breathing to their preferential side.
