1. Be sure to maintain your speed as you approach the wall. (Increase the speed if possible, by picking up your kick).

2. Be sure to maintain your body position as you approach the wall. (Lots of swimmers look forward and lift their head and chest as they approach the wall to see where they are going). The rule of thumb for this is, if you’re looking in the direction you’re going, you’re looking in the wrong direction. Always look at the bottom of the pool as you approach the turn or slightly forward to the "T" on the bottom of the pool.

3. For Sprinters, be sure to go the last 1 and a half cycles, or the last three strokes into the wall without a breath.

4. Middle and Distance swimmers should go the last cycle, or the last two strokes into the wall without a breath.

5. Always maintain your best swimming technique into the walls. Normal full strokes should be taken as you approach the turn. Many swimmers will shorten their stroke to try to speed up into the wall, which will cause them to loose rhythm and will increase resistance into the turn.

6. Remember, the best turns are a fast, straight, over the top tumble with a very tight tuck. The chest should be on the thighs and the chin will be tucked. If you’re in the middle of the turn, you should be able to open your eyes and look through your legs up through the water to the ceiling over your lane.

7. Tumble with your legs slightly apart so the water behind your legs will not be carried over with your legs on the turn.

8. Make sure when your feet hit the wall, the feet are pointing up to the ceiling approx. 6 -12 inches below the surface of the water. (Shallow for the young swimmers and deeper for the older swimmers).

9. When practicing a fast turn without looking at the wall, you will miss the first few until you begin to use senses other than sight for the turn. (Feel where you are in the pool, count your strokes, look for the “T” on the bottom). Experience is the best teacher on this one.

10. All turns should be aggressive and explosive.

Turn Explanation:

Approach the wall aggressively with normal full strokes, eyes looking at the bottom of the pool, maintaining a low chest position. On the next to last stroke you will set (tuck) your chin slightly backwards to get ready for the turn. On your last stroke into the wall, drop your chin and chest toward your thighs (tumble) for a tight tuck. The chest and head will drop under water before the last stroke gets to the head which will allow for a fast tumble. As your feet go straight over your head, keep the heels close to the water while aggressively throwing them over the water to the wall. As the feet hit the wall, make sure you have a good foot placement (feet pointing up). Stop in this position on the wall to check your foot placement the first few times you do this turn. Make sure the feet are firmly on the wall with the balls of the feet planted, not just the toes. Push off the wall on your back initially and as you leave the wall, begin your kick and rotation to the side, and then to the stomach as you pull with the bottom arm (the arm closest to the bottom of the pool) first, and then surface aggressively keeping your head and chest down as you surface.
