Shoulder pain is present on all pool decks, but what is the difference between a healthy and painful shoulder? Researchers at Drexel University looked at the differences between healthy and impinged shoulders after a swimming workout. Su 2004 determined after a workout there were no differences in kinematics following a swimming workout as both groups exhibited muscle fatigue.

Although swimming practice resulted in no significant differences in scapular kinematics for the healthy swimmers, there were significant decreases in scapular upward rotation in subjects with shoulder impingement.

This paper and many others have found weak scapular stabilizers and upward rotators in those with shoulder impingement. Unfortunately, researchers never look to see if inadequate muscle length, strength, or timing as the cause of this decrease in strength. This is partly due to the difficulty of measuring muscle tension (muscle length) and timing, simply put we don't have good measures to compare and note a significant change.

Tight muscles often inhibit muscles from working properly. Poor firing muscles can also inhibit proper muscular strength. Assessing and synchronizing these three variables is essential for a proper shoulder prevention program for healthy shoulders.
